DJ580.1 The Alinco DJ-580 uses a stereo 3 conductor plug for the microphone. If you use a third-party mic with only two conductors, you will short out the 5 volt supply. I assume this 5 volt supply is for the VOX and remote microphones sold by Alinco. Anyway, Alinco says that using a two conductor plug may damage the radio. If you have a two conductor microphone from another rig, and want to use it, you should be able to disconnect the 5 volts by doing the following: BEFORE YOU START, CHECK YOUR SCHEMATICS AND BE SURE TO RING OUT WHICH WIRE IS GROUND AND WHICH IS THE 5 VOLTS. 1. Open the radio (3 screws on the case, 4 at the battery connector, and the 3 nuts on the volumes & VFO. 2. Remove the middle circuit board that is attached to the back half of the radio (4 screws). 3. You will see a 2 wire connector. One wire should be ground (black), and the other 5 Volts (red). You can pull out connector and slip the 5 volt wire out. Then you can insulate the wire and its pin and leave it lying safely in the case. You can also reconnect the ground. 4. If you want to undo this mod you can just re-do the connection. I have done this mod to use the Radio Shack speaker mic. I have since purchased 3 pin mics and have returned the radio to normal. 73's, Jim, N3KHM @ KA3NVP.#WPA.PA.USA.NA
