Aha, further proof that the 309 was intended to be branded as a
Talbot before Peugeot (wisely?) decided to eliminate the name. Your
has an ancient Simca engine (1294 cc) - even more ancient than the
Simca-Chrysler engine that powers the 505 Turbo.

Anyway, the clunking is likely a driveshaft CV joint gone bad. Check
that the runner gaiters/bellows are intact. You should probably have
it repaired soon because it's knocking. It could shear and leave you
    stranded.

About the ignition lock, a locksmith might/should be able to repair
the return spring that's failed. It's just a mechanical bit and
should be simpler/cheaper to replace than 2 door locks and the whole
    switch.

When the ignition switch on my 405 failed about 6 years ago, the
locksmith who tried to fix it said that the worst ignition switches
in the world are Neimann/Valeo. He said that 80% of his ignition
switch business came from Neimann/Valeo, even though very few cars in
Canada come equipped with them (probably under 1%). Neimann used to
be pretty OK in the 1960s - my former 404 sedan's ignition switch
only failed after almost 400,000 miles.
