The most common ailment in this case is a dirty worn out master cylinder.
Before you replace it though, you should check for seized calipers, loose
wheel bearings, rear shoes out of adjustment, worn and swelling brake hoses.

Subject: brake pedal travel - 309

Hi can anyone give me any suggestions as to why the brake pedal on my
car is going to the floor? It only happens sometimes, the rest of the
    time the brakes are ok..
I am fairly sure there is no fluid leak/loss. Could fluid be pulled
back into the master cylinder occasionally, creating a vacuum in the
    brake pipes?

    many thanks
    John
