Classic master cylinder failure symptoms is it at first, will go slowly down when you are stopped, with little pressure on the pedal. A quick jab, and it works fine, sometime for days.
Run the engine, pump the brake pedal up, and hold it down, but reduce your foot pressure gradually. While still holding it with light pressure, pump the pedal, about 1/2 inch, up and down, but don't let off, or push hard. Then, hold it with light pressure. Should feel it lose pressure, and sink down. I never liked rebuilding Master Cylinders, due to possible worn bore.

Mike, Gary and George. I may price up a master cylinder repair kit,
after checking the other possibilities.. The brake tends to work
when you quickly depress the pedal, the seals can work properly under
these conditions.? but If you brake smoothly the fluid is probably
leaking past..
