Hi everyone,
After its succesful 3200 mile cross-country journey, my '89 405DL is
starting to experience a couple of problems.
#1 - The engine is starting to hesitate a bit upon acceleration. It happens
more often and more markedly when the engine has just been started and is
completely cold. It'll either surge, or else power will suddenly cut out
(albeit mildly). Overall, the car goes through good days where acceleration
is good all around, and bad days where it seems to be "holding off" until
one of the above symptoms (surging or hesitating) occurs. I seem to recall
talk of air flow meters going bad on the 405s and creating similar symptoms.
My engine has about 110K on it right now.
#2 - Now that I am in San Francisco, my clutch is getting a real workout.
When the engine is warmed up, there is a high pitched squeal coming from
what seems to be the left front wheel when I - a) release the clutch and
accelerate in 1st gear up a hill, and b) do the same after I shift to second
gear up a hill. This squeal from when the clutch first engages and lasts
until the clutch is fully engaged. Any thoughts? Throw out bearing? Pilot
bearing?
Thanks for any and all advice!
Adam
