I would be really surprised if the problem is the cluster or the control
unit. Both functions of the oil temp guage (oil level at startup, oil
temp while running) commonly stop working because the wiring becomes
brittle and breaks near the exhaust manifold. It runs to 2 sensors behind
the engine. My guage was dead when I got my '89 (Peugeot said it needed a
new control unit and guage); I fixed it in about an hour and wrapped the
part where it broke in foil to try to shield the new wire. Both functions
of the guage have worked for 3 years now.
