    It is important that the dip stick tube be sealed so the motor won't suck in
    "false" air and throw the fuel/air ratio out of whack.
    You have little choice except to fork out the $10 and get a new dip stick
    except to make your own.
    The new dip sticks seem to have a softer plastic handle maybe they will last
    15 years instead of the current 10.
