    Thanks for the responses.

Mike - I am interested in taking the car to the VW mechanic you mentioned.
Could you provide me with his name and phone number. Thanks. - The plug
leads are new and I have no means to test the coil. The back pressure in
the exhaust pipe was checked ahead of the cat converter and the reading from
the muffler shop was .5". I thought that was low enough that it would not
be the cause of the problem.

AND - someone on this list said he had an ECU. In moving the message, I
inadvertently deleted it and wondered if I could get that message again.
How can I test my ECU to tell if it is faulty?

Another matter - Yesterday I drove the car around the block to dry off the
brakes after washing it. Going up a slight hill I applied the brakes while
accelerating and found that there was only enough vacuum for one brake
application. On the second push the pedal didn't go down quite as far and
there was almost no braking effect. Is it normal to have so little vacuum
or could this be the reason why the manifold vacuum is so low (10") at idle?

Any suggestions that can be offered are appreciated. Thank you.
