405 GLXDT (GRDT) engine repair sucess, further questions.

Hello,
I'm in rather good spirits today after having finally
managed to get the engine running on my 405 DT. She
seems to have a little engine knock but I think its
just the old deisel fuel thats been in there for 10
months. I'll put in some fresh fuel which should
remedy that prob.
My main problem stems from the origin of the fault
which I have just repaired. The fault was a head
gasket failure by an oil conduit which first leaked
oil to the exterior (all over the timing belt) then
later into cylinder no.4 providing a wonderful smoke
screen to anyone behind me.
Now that I am currently in the process of converting
the car papers from UK to french (required for
insurance in france) I wont be able to drive the car
until I have got insurance which requires paperwork
and a 'control technique' (MOT). The problem I reckon
I'll have is oil residue in the exhaust which would
cause problems for the emissions test. Normally I
would knock the silencer lightly with a rubber hammer
and thrash the b***s off it for about 30 min. However
I dont have that luxury due to the lack of insurance.
My dad recommends running the engine for an hour or
so, but I'm not sure if that would be enough as the
engine isnt under any strain. Any suggestions.
My other question is I noticed a fair bit of play in
the steering while pushing and pulling the brake disk.
Before the gasket failure I had a problem of heavy
rumbling under hard braking at high speed. I managed
to exclude the disks. I wonder if this play is within
acceptable boundries or if it is the source of the
problem.
Also, anyone know how to improve the handling of a 405
estate. I dont really want to get into 'boy racer'
stuff, but would you have any suggestions that
wouldent break the bank (alloys, suspension, tyres)
Thanks for any help.
Matt
