Mi16 steering

A post earlier today has got me wondering if I'm barking up the wrong tree.
1 - My current '91 Mi16 has a slight pull to the left; but often it doesn't seem to pull at all, presumably depending on just how the pavement lies.
2 - I received the car with an '89 steering wheel, which won't stay adjusted properly; it wants to point 15-20 degrees to the left or the right no matter how many times I adjusted it and really cranked down on the nut. Putting a known good steering wheel from my donor car is giving me the same results. Therefore, I'm looking at swapping the steering column from the donor car. (I took a brief look at the Haynes a while back and it didn't look too tough a job.) Could the problem actually be in the steering rack, not the input?
This is actually not a big deal, except that it makes me hold the wheel asymetrically.
