405 glove box

This is too complicated to try to explain what I'm trying to do. Suffice it to say that my recently-acquired Mi16 has glove box issues. I've gotten real good at pulling the door off, even when the door is closed and won't unhook from the latch. I have a replacement door, of the wrong color, with a good latch mechanism that I'd like to use. I can't see how the mechanism can be removed from a door without first removing the pseudo-leather front panel.
The Haynes says I need to remove the screws from the bottom of the door in order to remove that plastic front panel. But the glove box doors on all three of the 405s in my driveway have only a row of little rivets at the bottom (I've already removed the ten screws that hold most of it together). I could drill out the rivets, but would I then be able to fasten a different front panel onto it?
