I remember now: a friend borrowed my 404 wagon and screwed up the automatic gear shift selector on the steering column because it was set up a little differently.

I liked that 404 wagon a lot; I never drove a 404 standard and just wanted to know why they weren't preferable (which is usually the case). I do understand automatics are usually worth more......

    Thanks Joe.

    and Joe says:

In all my years of 404 fun, it was the rare automatic trans that
    carried the 404 to a nice(r) vehicle--

    1. This auto trans is a 3 speed ZF,, but operated on a 2 speed (you
Actually started in 2nd gear- then shifted to 3rd) basis on a regular
daily ride--- the 1st gear speed kickdown could be adjustd if you
wanted jack rabbit starts or if you wanted the car to BEGIN in 1st gear...

    2. Auto trans commanded a higher selling price and by no means was any
of the Peugeot 404 cars in USA , stick or auto trans a real bagain--
they commanded a much higher selling price than a comparable USA car...

Even in the 1960's a Peugeot 404 was a Premium (cost) car

    3. Most anyone could drive an Automatic 404, but it was hard for a lot
of people to grasp the 4th gear stick trans.. even the Auto trans
shifter is different than most because Park is not near reverse gear...

    4. The ride in an automatic 404 is just different, compared to the
    early 1960- to 1966 C-3 stick cars--

This engineering was new for 1967 Models and past,,, used the Xc6
    motors

    5. This Auto trans was the Second Generation 404's,, as many changes
were made to this 404 to accept the larger (wider body of the trans
housing) Automatic, and minor suspension changes too

    1960-66 404's all stick trans
1967-73 404's Choice of stick or Auto trans
