It's not about safety. It's about money and protectionism. Obviously,
with the decline of the US auto industry, this protectionism hasn't been
completely successful. Small volume manufacturers leave. Medium
manufacturers don't bring in many of their really attractive models or
engine combinations. Large manufacturers build factories over here and
continue to sell 250,000 automatic Accords and Camrys a year.
*sigh*

Every thing is fine and dandy until your insurance company gets
involved. Sure you may be able to register, title and insure it but if a
wreck should occur you can bet that they will be looking for ways to get
out of the claim. I can see it now, car does not come up, and so the
insurance company of the guy that hit you starts to dig deep. Next thing
you know the DOT wants to have a conversation with you.
Registering and Titling a car does not mean it is legal! Your local
government is more than happy to take your money in exchange for a
sticker and a plate. It's not their problem or responsibility if the car
did not meet US standards, but thank you for your money!
I wish the hypocrisy of the NHTSA/DOT and EPA was not the case but it is
what is. Until car enthusiasts make this their Holy mission and lobby
for a change in regulation we will continue to be told our cars are
unsafe while at the same time states continue to allow motorcyclists to
ride without helmets!
