I posted here a couple of weeks ago about a Peugeot 403 that I found
for sale. At the time, it looked like there were no rims. I finally
was able to go out to the California desert to look at the car. It's
in a tow truck yard and the owner of the yard has filed for a lien
sale, as there is no pink slip or registration. I got there the day
before the guy was going to haul the 403 saloon and a 403 estate off
to the crusher. The saloon that I went to see is not in the greatest
shape, but I've seen worse cars brought back to life. The only major
rust I found was in the driver's floor which was rusted through. The
sills on both sides had some corrosion but still looked solid. The
tow truck guy found the rims for the car, so that problem is out of
    the way.

A problem is that no one knows the date of manufacture of the car.
There are two numbers on the firewall: 2202687 on a larger riveted
plaque and another narrow plaque above it with the number 157065.
Does anyone know which of these is the correct Vin number for titling
and registering the car and whether it's possible to determine the
year of the car from the Vin number and how?

I've already got three real old cars at my house and I'm right in the
middle of restoring a 1957 DKW. But I so much love and adore the
Peugeot 403 saloon that I would make room somehow, even if I have to
stick it on the lawn in my back yard. With its understated elegance,
I think it's one of the most beautiful cars ever built. It would kill
me to see such a great car go to a crusher.

By the way, does anyone know if the windshield and seats of the estate
can be fitted to the saloon on 403s?

Any info, especially regarding dating these cars would be greatly
    appreciated.

    Thanks again,
    Henry
