the "little tube" in question is a breather line ~ so that fumes do
not collect in the trunk but are routed back to the outdoors whilst
filling the tank with gas...I just did the same on my 403 a few weeks
ago. It is a pain, takes time and patienct, but possible! (Easier
without kids around)

of a pain, I just went through that exercise two days ago. You need
to disconnect the upper end of the hose on the tail lite filler and
maybe even pull off the light (mine was off) then you take out the
rubber ring that the hose goes through on the trunk wall. Then you
just wiggle it till it comes off, the little tube is just a little
longer than one would think it needed to be, but it will work,
barely. Oh, and the little tube goes between the two filler tubes
when you put it back, not inside the inner one.
