I have a 75 504 sedan that has been running roughly. I thought that I
might have a fouled plug. The plugs turned out to be fine. I checked the
compression. Cylinders 1,3, and 4 were in the 145-150 psi range. Cylinder
#2 read at 85 psi dry and 115 wet. This led me to believe that my problem
was more of a ring than a valve issue. I bought the car 16 years ago and did
a total rebuild at that time. I have probably put 210,000 miles or more on
the car since then. I did the valves a few years ago.
I think that next time up the car will be smog exempt. I would like to
fix the car and wonder if there is anything that I can do to pep it up. I am
prepared to buy a piston liner set, new oil pump, timing gears, chain, etc.,
but wonder if I can't go some other route to come up with a more powerful
motor.
I would love, for example to be able to install an XN6 in this car, but
the thought of figuring out how to install a f.i. unit in my 504 seems too
much for me.
So, my questions are: Assuming that I will have to rebuild it, what can
I do (within reason) to get more power out of my engine? Is the installation
of another later model engine feasible?
Thanks for any responses.
