    Joe,

I think they are all interchangeable except for the 4 speed auto
In other words you can put a 3HP22 into a 1961 404 that had the old C
    series 4 speed or
even a Jaeger clutch. All the 404/504/and 505 transmissions are the
    same length except the 4HP22
    which is longer.
Even the earliest 404 3 main bearing engines will mate to any XN6 bellhousing
The first auto in a 404 was a 2 spd affair in 1967 you should be able
    to pull it and
put in a 3HP22 which is better than the 3HP14 or whatever it was that
    was used in the 504
The 505 trans had a lockup torque converter, I dont know when the
    lockup started.
If using this trans in a 404 you'll have to use the Ujoint there are different
diameters of shafts as I found when I put a 4 spd from a 504 into my 68 404 SW
that had been an automatic. The U joint went right over the splines
    in the drive shaft and
the whole effort wouldn't move. I had used a 504 U joint onto the 404
    drive shaft.
Back apart again and in went the 404 U joint.
