Last week I noticed that my 81 504 TD (2.3L) was letting off steam like crazy from the expansion tank cap. I figured it was because the weather had gotten warmer and maybe the water pump was going... Right after turning on the engine I probed around and noticed it wasn't hot, yet air was escaping from the expansion tank cap and the hoses were under a lot of pressure. I checked all hoses for obstructions, blew the radiator out and found no obstructions, even checked out the water pump and re-tightened the belt, yet the problem is still there! The engine runs and sound perfect, no coughing or shaking, no misfires, no smoke. I just can't figure out where this air is coming from!

The only thing I can think of it that there's a tiny crack in the block or head, and the gas from a cylinder is entering the cooling system, or maybe the head gasket is leaking, with the same effect as above...

I even re-torqued the head for good measure...

I am considering treating the engine with some Engine Weld, or other such product and if it is a crack I'll see if it helps...
