All:
checked out a '79 504 diesel this AM. Car looks okay for its age but
suffers from some nasty rot in passenger side quarter area (parts
available?). She started up nicely, little excess smoke, and drove...well
like a '79 504 D, a far cry from my daily driver, a '85 505 turbo gas.
Nonetheless I love the 504 but this one had a suspicious amount of moisture
on the dipstick and some black mayonaise-like syrup on the inside of the
oil filler/breather cap. Bad head gasket? Did'nt drive for long enough to
get her really hot but no sign of warning from the heat sensor. Radiator
core looks sketchy too. Other thing is the noise. My ears were a bit
sensitive after driving this one. Far more noisy than my last diesel...a
'70 MB 220 D. Anyone have any experience taming the engine noise in a 504.
Vibration is one thing but I'm concerned about noise over 85 dB while
driving. This, I believe, is above OSHA standards and mine too. Other than
these problems the car seemed worthy of restoration. Steering, suspension,
brakes and tires seemed okay. Engine shuts down quickly too (good
compression?). New-ish leather 505 seats don't fit the look but sure are
comfy. Oh yeah, it had a sunroof too. No apparent sign of water leakage. A
tough call...these darn Peugeots still tug at my heart...but I'm not so
sure about this one. Any feedback greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.
best,
PS: stopped in at Reynold's Garage & Marine of Old Lyme, CT today. They
still sport a huge Lion sign. That and a healthy marine and Subaru biz.
Helps that they are right on the Connecticut River. Cut to the
chase...these guys have a lot of parts. Claimed the most in USA! Supposedly
PNA contacts them when they can't source parts. BTW anybody source parts
via PNA? For those interested...e'mail: reynolds@subarudealer.com , tel:
