I think My 77 had the same setup in the wheel and was not working so
I put the newer style in there. It should cancel and not turn on
when you turn the wheel.

How did you get it on without taking the assist arm off??

If you used that tie rod seperator tool you might have dammaged the
tie rod end. I never use that tool if I am going to reuse the rod
end as they always seem to bust the boot. Make sre there is no
foriegn material in the tapered hole.
