Moving to the edge of "topic" here, but thank you, Tom, for showing one more way that Canadian government is often more sensible than that of your immediately southern neighbors!

I don't know how it is in the US, but in British Columbia, you can purchase a car - any car, and take your license plates from your old car, and transfer the plates directly onto the new car (you must have the registration for the new car). Then you have ten days to transfer the insurance with ICBC (the government corporation that handles car insurance. So this means I can buy a car, just put insured plates from another car on the new car and drive it completely legally.

I did have an experience with my other car's plates on a car brought only
from one state to another. I had a 1970 VW Squareback in Maine with 215K
miles on it. I was buying one from a friend in Florida. We flew down with
the legal plates and reg'n (for the Maine car), drove back with those plates
on (reg'n in the glovebox) the Florida car. In Connecticut, a bloke
sideswiped us pulling in too soon after passing. I was tempted to let it go,
as we were OK, and the damage was under our repair limit. But the idea of
the guy continuing on the road endangering others was too much for me, and
we tailed him to the edge of a challenging neighborhood, took the
description and license number, found a phone and called the State Police,
of which organization my father had been a member years before. I met the
trooper and gave him my statement. He was very appreciative; we traded
pleasantries about policemen's families and public service; he told me that
more likely than not, the vehicle was stolen, and investigation would
dead-end, and he wished that wouldn't be the case. Finally, for the
completion of the record, he asked for my license and registration. The
license was fine, but he hesitated with the registration. He looked up at
the VIN near the window, then paused. Finally, he looked at the registration
again and said, "Says beige, but it's white." I hesitated, then said,
"Y-e-a-h." We shared a silent reflective moment. He looked around at Donna
and the boys, smiled at me and said, "Thanks for risking being a good
citizen. Please don't follow anyone else who hits you on this trip or any
other." I thanked him for his help and service, and we were on our way.

I know I had been stupid and was lucky! I don't think the result would have
been the same, had that happened in Maine, or if we were returning to
Connecticut. There would have been a heightened jurisdictional issue for the
officer, and he would have been at too great a hazard to miss it. So, I
haven't got any encouragement for taking U.S. plates to another country to
get a similar car, even with the ID tags. Too much weird stuff can happen,
and getting trapped in Mexico would not seem to be similar to getting
trapped in Connecticut (had we been unlucky and that had happened to us)!

Gotta say the dream is neat, though!!!

rate of about 3:1, reasonably priced in the used car market there. For
several years now I've been thinking about going to Buenos Aires and buying
a late model 504 diesel; ship it to Ensenada BCN Mexico. Grab a bus to
Ensenada, bringing with me the Calif plates, registration and dash & door id
tags from either my 504 or another 504 I had. After receiving it in Mexico
as a tourist I would change all the necessary items and drive it back home
to Santa Ana CA. I think it would work although I have not checked out all
the details yet. The only problem I can forsee is that , post 9/11, the
plates of all vehicles entering the US might be checked against a list to
make sure that car did indeed leave the US. For now it is just a pipe dream
        but some day.........
