404/504 service manual organization

Can anyone explain to me how these older manuals are organized?
I have part of the XD-XDP Diesel Engine manual, and I've scanned in
some of it. With the old manuals I have the tabs have a big number A
with two smaller numbers (B, C) underneath such as:
01
14.01
AA
BB.CC
And then a brief caption (engine removal and installation, for instance).
So, what do the numbers mean?
