rear shoe hold down springs '75 504 wagon

Trying to do the brakes on my '75 504d wagon. First experience with a non self adjust brake. I figured out how it worked after I got the drum off! What about those springs? How do they come off? Is there a way without the special tool? My snap-on tool that I have used for 15 years was no help. I imagine someone out there will be.
