Hi Radu,
Remove the coolant bottle, the bracket is optional and a real pain, avoid if
possible. Starter comes out the top... By the brake MC. Careful with the
battery lead its real soft copper stud.
No need to do the charcoal can.
3 bolts, lower and pass side are short, the drivers side upper is long and
goes thru the bell housing and has a nut back there. All 16 mmm

Subject: 86 505 turbo starter R&R
Greetings,
I suspect the starter in my 505 N9TE is bad. It's been emitting a
grinding noise for the past couple of days, and it finally stopped
turning several hours ago (completely silent, no clicks). All other
electrics on the car work properly, the battery is good, battery
terminals/connectors are clean, solenoid (+) gets a full 12V, and
shorting the solenoid (+) and (-) does not result in the engine
cranking.
Do listmembers have any tips on how to approach the starter removal?
The motor seems to be "nicely" tucked underneath the intake manifold,
but is potentially accessible from above the engine bay. I can't see
the bolts holding the starter to the block (how many?). The charcoal
canister is in the way and will need to be moved together with some
of the hoses in there. I would greatly appreciate any advice on how
to make this easier.
