OK, since I can't receive mail from my Earthlink account everywhere
(long story, idiot admin, beyond my control), I'm moving this back
onto the list for now. If people could please reply there I'd
appreciate it as it's a five-mile drive for me to be able to pick up
    my mail right now.

Various people have suggested the following things:

    - Vacuum Leak: Sure, I can see how this could be the problem. Any
ideas *where*, though? I've checked the intake (large rubber boot),
line to the distributor, and hoses to the (to me unknown) valves
mounted on the left side of the engine compartment. All look fine.

    - Air Flow Meter stuck open: Also a possibility. However, I have
very little experience with smog-standard cars. How do I locate
this, and once I do find it, how do I determine if it's stuck open or
    not?

    - Short on Fuel / Fuel Pressure: I checked the pumps. They're
working as they always have, and there's no weird current draw
suggesting a bad ground or similar at them.

    - No Compression: I sure hope not. Car should be OK; it hasn't
overheated and isn't blowing oil smoke. I'll check this later,
    though.

    - Valve timing out: shouldn't be, it was just adjusted less than 5000
miles ago when the timing gear was done. However, it is a
possibility and I'll check into it.

    - Pulling hard when floored: yes, but only below 3000 RPM. I should
also note that this is a quasi-intermittent possibility: I was able
to back out of a parking space on just the clutch without it dying or
stuttering earlier. Over 3000, everything's fine.

    - Sound of a miss: there's no spluttering or backfiring. This is why
I'm suspecting the advance; it's like it's going off-timing enough
that it stutters and has to really try to pull itself along, but
doesn't do any of the really-badly-in-need-of-a-tune things like
    backfiring, fouling plugs, etc.

If anyone has any ideas, I'd love to hear them... I'm stuck for
