I am pleased to report that my N9TE starter is up and cranking again. Many
thanks to George Nunez for providing how-to advice. It turns out the
starter motor (Paris-Rhone) needed a new solenoid [US$33, made in Brazil
(!)], brushes ($2 each), and a bushing (free). Labor charge was $27.
Overall, starter R&R is not too difficult a DIY job on this car. Room is
scarce under the turbo intake manifold, though. I solved the expansion jar
"problem" by bending the bracket forward until folded on top of the empty
battery tray. Getting the charcoal canister out of the way provided
additional room for wrench swinging.
