Many thanks to everyone who replied with suggestions to this
problem. After checking every damn vacuum hose for leaks, I think
I've narrowed the culprit down to two possibilities: the EGR valves
or Oxygen Sensor. My money's on the Oxygen Sensor; it was a 60,000-
mile sensor replaced about 75,000 miles ago when I bought the car.
At least it's the one-wire type, so I can probably afford to replace
    it.

Unfortunately, with the heat wave we've been having here in Southern
California lately I haven't been able to get the car cooled off
enough at a convenient time to be able to get under it, unplug the
thing, and see if that is indeed the problem. I'll fill y'all in on
the results of that little experiment once I can actually do it.
