'86 505 Turbo, automatic, 229,000 miles has developed a most
disconcerting trend of "dying" for about a minute then running fine
again as if nothing happened.
This happens with either light electrical load (lights and AC off) or
heavier load (lights, AC, fans).
It usually never does it when it is cold, but once it reaches "the
magic temperature" when the yellow LED on the dash flashes about
seven times, that's when it might start acting up.
When it dies, it dies completely, as if someone pulled the ignition
or fuel. It does not sputter then die, it dies very suddenly,
without warning. Sometimes it dies while cruising at highway speed,
other times it dies at a stoplight. Cranking the engine right after
it dies produces no results. I can hear the main fuel pump cycle
when cranking while the car is dead. After the car has sat for about
a minute (about the time it takes to push it off the road), it starts
immediately and runs fine. I have not been able to troubleshoot,
since the car doesn't stay dead long enough for me to discover if it
is gas or spark. The incidents are becoming more frequent, however,
now about once every commute (about 30 minutes one way). Temperature
in the area has been around 70 degrees lately.
Things I do know -- primer fuel pump in tank hasn't operated since I
got the car in '95 @ 120,000 miles. Main fuel pump replaced about
two years ago. Fuel pressure regulator at back of injector rail
replaced shortly after we bought the car. When the car is running,
it has a very low idle that does not respond to idle adjustment screw
on intake manifold. Can't find any freyed or loose electrical
connections anywhere around the engine.
Has anyone on the list encountered this exact same problem? What
fixed it for you?
