505 85 I'm not the only one who feels at home in it...

I made substantial progress in rigging up a factory-look starter button for
my '85 505 STI TD. Thanks to the list; I managed to work a wire through
alongside the main wire bundles on the left side of the underscuttle, under
the fuse box; indeed, I pressed through a coathanger and was delighted to
find it not only went through the firewall, it routed directly into the
fusebox. I found that two of the spare fuse slots actually carry power, so
I used one of them for my power feed for the new starter relay.
My unpleasant surprise was that when I opened up the fusebox and removed the
top panel (the one that the fuses fit into), I found that mice had built a
nest underneath the fuses, inside the fuse box itself (it's quite big in
there, you know, dry, and open underneath; mouse heaven, I'm sure). Not
only had the buggers stuffed an unbelieveable amount of my hood padding in
there, but they had nibbled on several wires, causing at least one short
(one wire had the insulation melted off of it for about four inches). I
cleaned out the nest material, dropped in some mothballs, and soldered in
new repair wiring (not easy with all those wires packed so close together).
Some of you might want to check out your fuse boxes for signs of the
critters; I would never have thought to look there before. A mouse is a
terrible thing to waste. In the slang sense. In your fusebox.
