    No type of "preventative maintenance" that you can do for an oxygen
    sensor, replacing it is the only thing there is to do. They will
    last a certain length of time before they start to deteriorate, a
    poorly running engine makes them deteriorate quicker because of the
    exhaust content. Oxygen sensors have a service interval they should
    be replaced by (kind of like filters do), partly because it is
    sometimes difficult to tell when one is beginning to go bad. When
    they go bad, they start to become sluggish in changes in their
    output, they also may become inaccurate after they go bad. They are
    a way of measuring how rich or lean the engine is running, and the
    ECU makes small [hopefully they are small] adjustments to the mixture
    based on the oxygen sensor's output.
