In re-doing most of my front end (shy of the rack) on my 1984 505 wagon
I pulled back the inner ball joint gaiter "with bonded metallic ring" over
the ball joint casing. I did this with the intent to clean out the inside the
gaiter and lubricate it. When I tried to slip it back over the metal casing
    it tore.
My shop manual informs me that I should also change the "stop washer
assembly with stud," and that the stop washer should be "automatically
replaced each time the assembly is dismantled."
I am wondering if anyone has any experience with this stuff. Is it
essential to change the stop washer and what is the secret for getting the
"gaiter with bonded metallic ring" over the ball joint casing without tearing
    it.
Is there a place to buy the gaiter in the US?
    Thanks,
    Ken
