Just when I think I have done a whole lot of work for nothing someone shows
up wit a fresh perspective. Not long ago I complained about a bad
connection to the right rear lights and was told emphatically (I forget who
on the list) to check the fuse. I checked the %^&*^%$ fuses several times
prior and every thing checked out only this time it was to my surprise, a
fuse???? So I guess the lesson is go through the exercise a couple of times
to make sure you haven't missed anything! So good on you Marty for taking
the initiative to put in a backup starter switch. If you use it just once
you will have made it worthwhile. I have found that contacts are a source
of grief over and over. The tubular fuses on the 504 are notorious for
developing dead spots on them so it is wise to do a little spring cleaning
and scuff up those pesky contacts

and it looks trick (installed on the left lower dash, where there's a
removable plate on most cars; red shielded button, satin black housing,
little silver label). It works perfectly.

didn't work at all. So what did I do this weekend that inadvertently fixed
it? I have two guesses: (1) one of the wires in the fusebox that I
reinsulated was involved, even though as far as I can tell the most affected
wire was the one for the radio memory. (2) In the process of doing the
starter button wiring, I had to remove the starter relays above the fusebox
(so I could open up the fusebox). I had earlier removed and checked the
relays, and they tested fine. But perhaps the act of repeatedly removing
and reinstalling them cleaned some additional corrosion off the contacts.

clearly there is or was SOME problem in the starter system wiring, and it's
nice to have an emergency backup. Still, it illustrates once again that
many of the problems we encounter in these cars may be less a matter of lack
of quality and more a matter of not correctly apprehending the problem (even
when our investigation proceeds appropriately; I KNOW I looked at that relay
earlier...) The other moral of the story is to check the fusebox wiring
carefully when everything else seems to check out individually OK. I would
never have thought to check UNDER the fuse panel; I should have.
