505 85 Inside the Door Panel

An observation and two questions:
Observation: I took off the inner lining of the door panel to grease the
innards, and down in the bottom of the door cavity I found a large, thick,
asphalted-paper strip, with the edges curled lengthwise. After some
investigation, I found that two of these had originally been glued to the
inside of the outer door skin, probably to give it the feeling of heft and
reduce resonant vibration and noise. I don't recall seeing this on any
other 505.
Question: Now that the door is wide open, I thought it might be a good idea
to spray something inside it to reduce the possibility of rust (perhaps oil,
perhaps something else). Does anyone have a favorite material they would
use for this application?
Question: Has anyone tried putting additional sound insulation inside the
outer door panel? What did you use, and did it help?
