1986 505GL XN6 4spd auto shift linkage problem

The shift linkage on my car came apart yesterday. My stepfather got under
the car and put it back together, but he thinks it is loose and we're not
sure how it should be attached. He said he saw a rod with a loop and a rod
with perhaps a ball on the end that went through the loop, but that it slid
back in really easily. Is there a piece that disintegrated or fell out,
perhaps? How should it stay connected?
