    Hi Tamara:

I've also got an '86 505GL. I had the same problem you're now having
with your loose, falling apart linkage. Mine never did entirely fall
apart, but it was VERY loose and my shifter lever in the car would
    'chatter'.

Turns out those linkages under the car of which you speak have some sort
of rubber bushing which was originally intended to hold the metal parts
together securely. I think with age and wear the rubber disintegrates
and you either get loose parts, hence the chatter I experience, or in a
worst case scenario, the linkages fall apart from one another entirely.

I solved my problem by simply having my local peugeot garage/mechanic
fit used linkages. It didn't cost me much and I'm sure you (or a friend
or your mechanic) could easily fit a used specimen onto your car. Call
George at Sunset Coachmen (704-392-8193)...he's located in Charlotte,
North Carolina and has a vast stock of used parts cars.

One point: if and when you install a used linkage, there's obviously
some threaded adjustments on them. Once installed, they need to be
adjusted properly so the Neutral Safety Switch works right. This is the
gizmo that prevents the car from starting unless it's in Park or
Neutral. If it's not adjusted properly, the car won't even start when it
is in Park or Neutral. I had intermittent problems like that until J.P.
at Sunset did a quick 2 minute adjustment (he of course knew all about
it!) and have never had a problem since. I'm sure once you install the
linkage you could experiment 'til you got it right, too. Sunset would
surely be happy to coach you on it, as well, I'd think.

    Good luck!
