It is possible that the fuel pump has finally died since it has been
making an odd noise. Do you hear it energize when you turn the key to
    crank?

If it does not energize, you should probably put a test light or VOM
on the positive terminal and watch what happens when you crank. If
there is no +12v to the pump, you'll have to start tracing back.

Also, you can do a preliminary spark test. Disconnect the ignition
coil wire from distributor cap and place the wire such that the metal
connector part of it is within 1/4 inch (or so) of a chassis ground
(like the strut tower or something). Have someone crank the engine--
you should see a nice healthy spark jump the gap. If so, your
    ignition system is fine.

The fault is either the fuel pump fuse, some wiring, or a funky
tachymetric relay. The original techymetric relays can be
troublesome. New replacement ones rarely if ever give trouble. My STI
has run perfectly for over 12 years (and almost 170k additional
    miles) with a new one.
