Your uneven coloration is probably due to some funky injectors--if
these are original unserviced units, I can understand why. You'll
definitely note much smoother and more powerful operation with a set
of clean calibrated injectors. How consistent were the gaps on the
old plugs?
I know I've just about beat this subject to death, but I have to
recommend a can of BG 44K at each tune up. Go to a parts counter at a
car dealership and see if they carry it, they probably do. The stuff
really works, it will clean the injectors, valves, and combustion
chambers. The 44K does exactly the same thing that their fuel system
service does--the service that pumps pure BG cleaner through the fuel
rail... except 44K does it via a tank a fuel.
On the Turbo automatics, I usually recommend a trans fluid change
(just drain and refill 2.75 quarts) atleast every 10k miles--about
every other engine oil change. People who actually "drive" their
Turbos usually need this--somehow I think that you fall into this
category :) A lot of clutch material gets shed into the fluid from
all the slipping the trans does during a high boost shift, so the
fluid gets contaminated in a hurry. The "filter" in there is just a
screen designed to trap large particulates.
Definitely keep those valves adjusted to maintain maximum lift and
duration--plus it makes the idle speed and mixture setup more
accurate.
