You want to know how to make a 505 TD get crappy economy on the
highway? Drive it at top speed for a while. I did this once and my
average economy (crazy speed + docile driving) dropped to about 25
mpg.
Still, this was nothing like one of the top speed runs I witnessed
in "Blackie". We ran an empty stretch of new highway, about 15 miles
long, at wide-open-throttle. Our speed never dropped below about 144
(about 5400 RPM) on some mild hills, and our peak velocity was... um,
yeah. The car consumed almost a quarter tank of fuel, according to
the guage. That's about 5-6 mpg... WOW!
