I had heard of this before. It's also mentioned in the Wikipedia
entry for the Peugeot 505, that they were used as taxis in NYC.
A couple of searches found this on a forum somewhere..
"I wonder if "The Great New York City Taxi Cab Experiment" actually
was a different chassis. They were all diesels back in '84 that were
given to the Taxi companies to promote that car (apparently it didn't
work). I've been told that a couple of those Taxi Cabs are still in
service! Mow many millions of miles would that be? There were also
some '85's Turbos that were used by Sunshine Car Rentals in Los Angeles. "
