I had heard of this before. It's also mentioned in the Wikipedia
entry for the Peugeot 505, that they were used as taxis in NYC.

A couple of searches found this on a forum somewhere..
"I wonder if "The Great New York City Taxi Cab Experiment" actually
was a different chassis. They were all diesels back in '84 that were
given to the Taxi companies to promote that car (apparently it didn't
work). I've been told that a couple of those Taxi Cabs are still in
service! Mow many millions of miles would that be? There were also
some '85's Turbos that were used by Sunshine Car Rentals in Los Angeles. "

A search on the New York City Taxi Experiment revealed this article
    from 1995...
    http://query.nytimes.com/gst/fullpage.html?res=990CE4D8163CF932A05753C1A963958260

"The taxi commission's requirements for cabs used to be based on
those for police cars, but Mr. Lynn said that was a relic of a time
when most cars could not meet the stringent crash safety standards
that all models now meet. He said the last time the commission tested
a cab that was not also used as a police car was in the 1970's, when
a Peugeot was given a trial. But the Peugeot could not take the
pounding meted out by city streets, riders and drivers. "

    Interesting stuff...
