Exhaust leak, 84 turbo diesel

Has anyone dealt with one of these? It seems to be ahead of the
turbo, when I get a hand this evening I'll try to locate it, but
judging from the puff of smoke uppon cold start it seems to be under
the exhaust manifold, and the sharp tick tick tick makes me believe it
is before the turbo, that would leave the gasket between the turbo and
the exhaust manifold, those are usually fun to change :(
