    Gunnarramonet,

      I'd suggest taking it to your local
    starter/alternator/generator rebuilder and letting
    them rebuild it. Then again, it might just be the
    brushes or regulator that needs replacing.

      I'd say that a lot of that $290 is because its a
    Peugeot alternator, but, either way, I'm pretty sure
    that the cost to rebuild it wouldn't be significantly
    more than any other run of the mill Marchal, Marelli,
    Iskra, or Bosch unit. You might get lucky and only
    have to pay $40 or so. Of course, you'll have to R&R
    it.
