I agree with going to a rebuilder.
When the alternator light came on in my 84 505 in March, it was due to worn
brushes. I took the alternator to a rebuilder, they replaced the brushes
(re-using the plastic carrier and springs). Cost me $10, and it has been
working fine for a couple months since then.

It was a Motorola 70Amp alternator. The car only has about 80,000 miles on
it, so I figure the rest of the alternator (diodes, bearings, regulator)
should have lots of life left.

    Subject: 604 Turbodiesel (US model)

I have just purchased at auction in Seattle a pristine 1982 delft
blue over blue leather 5 speed 604 Turbodiesel. I am only the car's
second owner; the original owner recently passed away after a long
illness I was told. Apparently the car has been garaged and undriven
for well over 10 years (there's just 118k on the odometer).

I managed to get the car back to the San Francisco despite the
alternator failing after just one hour on the road (everything else
worked perfectly even though I needed to keep all the accessories
turned off). I never imagined that the 2.3 turbodiesel would be such
a great freeway engine -- it sailed over the Syskiyou and Shasta
summits on I5 right beside all the gas cars (I thought that I'd be
relegated to the far right with all the big rigs). To my shock, I
even received a speeding ticket in Grant's Pass OR for doing 80 on a
    55 mph zone!

My question to anyone who might know where I might be able to obtain
a new/reconditioned alternator quickly. En route home, I stopped at
an auto parts store and discovered that the 70 amp alternator new
would set me back $290.00. I'm happy to pay this price unless I can
find the equivalent for a cheaper price.
