Poking around the wreckers today, I met someone who claimed to be, well,
unusually knowledgeable on the diesels. One of the things he suggested to me
was to replace the steel-backed fan impeller with the older all-plastic one,
supposedly also used on the 504. He says the heavier steel-backed impeller
is too heavy for the fan clutch and causes early failure. Can anyone confirm
this as true?? I was sort of hoping to drop the whole thing and go to an
all-electric fan (better shrouded, too) so I'd like to hear the pros and
cons.

He also told me a lot about testing and rebuilding injectors, stating the
older (504, I think) were adjustable for pressure somewhat like tappets
whereas the 505 ones require changing shims. Told me a lot more which I
will try to remember & pass on. Like Bosch starters were better than Paris
Rhone. Motorola alternators better than Paris.... I think he used MGB seals
in the power steering valve (upper & lower seals -- save the cost of a new
rack.) He also indicated you CAN adjust the fuel injection pump for timing
BY EAR.

I forgot to ask him what is the consequence of putting the small injector
nozzle washer upside down vs normal -- does anyone know if it matters or
why??

Last of all, has anyone else tried running diesels on blends of recycled
(free) transmission fluid or other fuels?? If not, visit the web site at

Just curious -- Calif. diesel is now 1.75.
