505 Noises - solved

Hi everyone,

We finally had a break from the rain this weekend so I did some work
on my 505 STI. You may recall the noises I reported and asked for
advice on were metallic sounding and predominant on decelleration.
It turns out my catalytic converter is shot. It looks like new
outside but is completely screwed up inside. I guess that would
contribute to my car failing the emissions test.

In an earlier post I complained about my gas mileage being quite poor
and asked for feedback. PeugeotLew had a few suggestions and they
were right on. My microswitch was faulty and was causing all kinds
of problems. I rigged up a switch from my computer junk box and got
it working again. The car is completely different now. My vacumm
advance unit is still not 100% but it does advance slightly. My
guess is that at higher RPMs it is fully advanced as required but the
snap acceleration doesn't create enough vacumm to compensate for the
pinhole leak. I'm in the process of checking what the new figures
will be for mileage. Judging by the gauge needle it is much
better...

The only thing making noise now is my power steering belt. When I
change that is should be as quiet as new. Anyone know the belt size
(XN6)?

Senen.
