A couple of points about ignition. The pinging noise heard when timing
is to early or octane is to low is the result of an uneven explosion I
have heard it described as a reverberation . Whatever it does not in any
way create extra heat in fact it being a symptom of a bad burn it
probably is a colder running engine than it should be as Lill says late
timing makes for a hot running engine. From memory, the total advance on
the XN6 is about 40 deg. roughly 10 deg BTDC that is where the distr. is
set ,10 deg comes from the vac. adv. at about 16 in. hg. and the
remaining 20 deg. comes from the centrifical advance weights in the
distr. at 3000rpm these are by no means exact but aprox. So with light
throttle at cruising speed the car might be 10 deg late with little
trouble .
