The mags will make a huge difference. I put a set of '84 505S mags on a
'78 504 GL with a fresh set of Michelins and it made a big difference in
handling. The suspension is comfortable but you can pleasantly throw
the car into turns and it would respond nicely. The lower profile made
for a slight increase in road "feel" but it was well worth it.

I had an '81 504 wagon that I turbocharged. The results are very
impressive but unless you can get hold of a 5sp you'll be over-revving
much of the time. I had an RPM gauge and turbo boost gauge setup to
keep tabs on things but I couldn't get hold of a 5sp tranny and ended up
selling it for an '86 505 STI (5 sp). The only obstacle in my project
was mounting the air filter for the turbo - not a big deal. I have a
preference for the XD/2 and XD/2S engines over the 2.5L ones. While I
don't have any direct experience with the newer 2.5, my parts supplier
laid it out in plain terms - 2.5L parts are much more expensive.
Besides, I figure Peugeot got it right after such a long production run.
I've heard those engines were (and still are) used for marine and
generator applications. Also heard you can get a cast iron head for
them out in CA. That would solve the one and only problem with those
engines - head gasket failure and head cracking/warping.

Don't know about the 2.5L, but the 2.3 XD/2S used an Air Research
turbocharger. The significance is that Mercedes, Audi, and Volvo used
the same turbocharger on their turbo diesels. You may try that avenue.
Be careful though, as Mercedes also used Garrett turbochargers
interchangeably.

I'll talk to a guy I know who just recently offered me a set of
STI/Turbo rims but I declined because they were metric. These were not
the "turbine type" that resemble the Mercedes rallye rims of the
eighties, rather they were the newer 8 "spoke" type rims. I believe he
wanted $50 each for them.

Sorry, not with gas, just diesel. It's much easier. The Air Research
is gated at only about 15% capacity. Playing with the waste gate spring
and aneroid compensator does the trick. You won't have such an easy
time with the gas through...

Just remembered that my Classic Motorbooks writeup on the late model
Turbos noted an increase in boost. If I remember correctly they did
some modifications to the throttle and electronic controls between model
years. I'll try to dig it up if you're interested.
