I beg to differ on your favorible opinion of the ZF 4HP22 this
transmission has had problems since it's into in the 86 model year 505.
The problem can be caused by reving the motor in neutral or park above
2000 RPM . California ceased this part of its E test on these cars
because of the destruction of the transmissions .Few of these
transmissions made it past 100,000 mi. (probably fewer had their oil
changed in that 100,000). The end is apparently in sight when the car
creeps when in neutral. The mere installation of a master kit will oft
times give only temporary relief. The cure is a modifacation inside and
the installation of some improved teflon seals . I get this from the
company that does Peugeot Americas trany work. They would overhaul my
trans or modify my pieces if I sent them and supply the improved
pieces.
These transmissions are wonderful when they are working but interms of
longevity , compared to their ptedecessor the ZF 3HP22 they suck. I'm
sure this problem was corrected by ZF which is apparently owned by Borg
Warner but when, I don't know.
I also heard that Toronto Automatic succesfully rebuilds the 4HP22, a
couple years ago the price to the trade was $1500 Can.
I have an 85 S 505 Wagon with the 3HP22 the ATF was black when I bought
the car at 144,000 KM I'vd changed the trans at least 10 times and at
240,000 the oil is red and the trans is still acting perfectly. The
extra overdrive gear seemed to carry a heavy price .
