Yes, all US 505 automatics from 86 on are the 4HP22. For several years,
Peugeot was subletting the tranny rebuilding to an incompetent shop in NY, I
have heard. For the past several years they have been done by an excellent
shop in CT. Perhaps your father got one of the early ones.

Remember, though--the ATF needs to be kept clean! There is a drain plug for
that purpose (6mm allen tool), which should be excercised every 12000 miles.
If that has been neglected, changing fluid several times in succession may
be required to clean it up, as only about a third of the fluid is drained
each time. The filter should be changed now and then too (torx T27 tool).
And DON'T rev the engine above 1500 rpm in neutral or park.

If the trans comes out again, be sure to check the condition of the u-joint.
Expensive, but cheaper than paying for the labor twice.
