The ZF 4HP22 was the 4 spd auto used in all 505's from the start of the
'86 model year. Allthough I haven't put in one of the old 3HP22's in
place of the 4spd it looks like a fairly straight forward swap . Even
the shifter should work. The 3spd stuff that bolts to the crank to turn
the torque converter would be required , unless the 4 spd torque
converter fits into the 3spd.
Like to hear from anybody who has tried this swap..As the 3hp22 was
hooked to the 6cyl BMW upto 82-83 . It has a well deserved rep as being
BOMB PROOF where as the 4HP is well known as a SOFT BOX. The ready
availability of the 3HP and the potential ease of the swap should make
it a serious consideration.
