Here are two postings from Brian Holms at PeugeotToGo, Washington DC...
1.
It is probably the front splines on the driveshaft, with lesser damage to the
tranny tailshaft splines, assuming you have checked the rear axles and rear
axle nuts. I know of at least 20 cases of bad front splines, one case of bad
rear splines. V6 powered cars are the worst.
A good used driveshaft is about $100; stick and auto driveshafts are
different in 86--you gotta get the right one.
2.
Have you checked the bellhousing to engine-block bolts? If they are loose
you might get that shifter rocking. There are supposed to be split sleeves
around the two side bolts, which locate the bell to the block precisely.
They can get lost if the engine or trans is ever swapped for a used one.
There is no transmission mount; the engine-trans-torquetube-differential are
all bolted together rigidly, supported at each end on rubber mounts, and all
bolts must be tight. But if all that stuff checks out, the driveshaft
splines seem the most likely, although I am surprised if this has been going
on for months without failing completely.
Cheers, Steve
